The team at Westbird Animal Hospital is a group of dedicated animal lovers. Dr. Carlos Smith acquired the clinic from Dr. Carlos Smith in 2022 and together have put together a strong team that has made caring for and loving your pets the top of their priority list. We are pet owners and lovers and will treat your pets like we treat our own - like members of our families. Dr. Smith and staff maintain a friendly and relaxed environment for clients and patients. With a strong commitment to all things "pet healthcare", many of our past staff members have gone on to veterinary school or to different areas of the veterinary field.     Lisardo Martinez

    Dr. Carlos Smith, a life-long animal lover who was much influenced by his father, also a veterinarian. Dr. Smith grew up in Miami, graduating from Southwest Miami High School and then attending the University of Florida from which he graduated with High Honors in 1982. After graduation, he worked in group practices in Miami until opening Westbird Animal Hospital in 1987. Over the years he has had the blessing, responsibility and privilege of sharing in the special bond which exists between his clients and their pets.

    Valeria, is our morning receptionist. She's always loved animals (except for Lizards) and hopes to one day own a farm. In her spare time she likes to go to the beach, try new restaurants and explore the city to find new and fun activities to do.

    Welcome to Westbird Animal Hospital! I'm Dr. Carlos Smith, and I'm honored to lead our practice in providing exceptional veterinary care to the pets and families of our community.

    With over 6 years of experience in veterinary medicine and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from St. Georges University, I specialize in small animal medicine, covering internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, radiology, dermatology, and wellness/preventative care. My passion lies in delivering compassionate, high-quality care tailored to meet the unique needs of each pet while building strong, lasting relationships with our clients and their furry family members.

    As a Miami native, I am deeply committed to giving back to my community through compassionate veterinary services. I believe in the importance of preventative care as the foundation for a healthy and happy pet, advocating for regular check-ups, vaccinations, and early detection of health issues. Education is key, and I'm dedicated to empowering pet owners with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their pets' well-being.

    Outside of work, I enjoy staying active as an avid sports fan, indulging in reading, and cherishing quality time with my wife and our two young boys. At home, we're lucky to share our lives with Ruby, our Mini Australian Shepherd, and Luna, our beloved tortoiseshell cat.
