Preventative Care

Preventative Vet Care

At Westbird Animal Hospital in Miami, FL, we believe the old adage about prevention being the best medicine. That's why we are committed to providing your pet with the preventative care he needs to get and stay healthy. It all starts with an annual wellness exam. These regular well-visits allow the vet the opportunity to detect any developing issues with your pets' health and treat them early.

.

A wellness visit is also when pet vaccines, flea and tick, and other preventive medication can be given to your four-legged friend. So what does a typical preventative exam look like? Read on to find out.

Introductions and Questions

Preventative exams typically begin with the vet team saying hello and asking a few preliminary questions about your pets overall health and behavior. This can help alert us about what to look for during the physical.

Vitals

Your pets weight, temperature, and respiratory rate might all be taken to determine if they're within the normal range.

Physical Exam

The physical exam is the main part of the examination. Here, the vet will perform a thorough examination of your pet. This might  include ears, eyes, teeth, listening to the heart and lungs, checking the condition of the skin, coat, and paw pads. We might also look at your pet’s gait, stance, and palpate the abdomen to check for signs of enlarged organs.

Vaccines and Preventive Medication

After the physical exam gives your pet a clean bill of health, the vet may administer any needed vaccinations and give flea and tick treatment to prevent fleas and ticks.

Further Diagnostics

If the vet finds anything we feel needs a closer look, we may order further testing which can include bloodwork, urinalysis, and more.

Wrap Up

At the end of the exam, your vet will sit with you and make recommendations based on our findings. This could include a change in diet, use of supplements, increased exercise, or other things to help keep your pet healthy.
